Malawi athletics team leaves today for Harare, Zimbabwe, to contest in the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Southern Region Seniors Championship this weekend.

Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) general secretary Frank Chitembeya yesterday said a delegation of 14 athletes and three officials will travel by road to the track and field event.

Chitembeya: We are confident

The travelling athletes are Boniface Phiri and Susan Tengatenga (100 and 200m races), Harry Sichali and Happy Ndacha Mcherenje (10 000m), Grevazio Mpani, Kefasi Kasiteni, Abina Chinga, Nalicy Chirwa and Mercy Malembo (5 000m); Chancy Master and Cecilia Mhango (1 500m); Benedict Makumba (800m), Frank Chitembeya Junior (400m) and George Jana Junior (throws).

Moses Kondowe is coach for the team, Thandie Mbeya is team manager while AAM president Godfrey Phiri is leader of delegation.

“With this squad, we are confident of winning medals,” Chitembeya said.

Kasteni, who was part of the Malawi squad that returned empty-handed from the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil, said he will use the contest as a platform to prove that he is still in the game. n
